Albany - Charter Schools Institute Executive Director James D. Merriman announced today the appointment of Cynthia M. Proctor as Institute Director of Public Affairs. With more than 10 years experience in the communications field, including seven years in higher education, Ms. Proctor brings a comprehensive set of writing, editing, and media relations
oversee the implementation of a multi-faceted communications plan—from media relations to presentation and publication development, and enhancements to the Institute’s current website.
“Our focus from day-one has been on transparency and open communication,” said Merriman. “We are very pleased that Cynthia has come on board to help inform the charter school community and the public-at-large about the progress of our schools, and generally, about our commitment as a charter school authorizer to assuring accountability.”
Prior to joining the Institute, Ms. Proctor served as a member of the senior leadership team of the Office of the Provost at the State University of New York System Administration where her responsibilities included speech writing, web and publication development, and participation in a broad range of academic initiatives—from the University’s academic planning process, Mission Review, to the implementation of the University’s New Vision in Teacher Education action agenda. Ms. Proctor was formerly Director of Communications for Urbach, Kahn, and Werlin PC (now Urbach, Hacker, Young International).
“I have long been a supporter of the charter school movement,” said Proctor. “It was the Institute’s tri-part commitment to accountability, transparency, and academic excellence that drew me to the public affairs position. I am so pleased to be part of the Institute team.”
Ms. Proctor received her B.S. degree in Public Relations/Journalism from Utica College of Syracuse University. She is a 2003 recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.
The Charter Schools Institute was created by the State University of New York Board of Trustees to administer their responsibilities under the Charter Schools Act of 1998, including the review of applications, assisting in the development of charter school accountability plans, and considering charters for renewal. The Institute has become recognized as a national leader in the public charter school movement, providing extensive experience in charter schools and all aspects of public education, including curriculum, school operations, accountability, fiscal oversight and program development. |
