District: CSD 23
Authorizer: SUNY
Partner Organization: Uncommon Schools, Inc.
The mission of Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School is to prepare each student for college.  The educational program is based upon three pillars: (1) We believe that creativity flourishes within a structured academic environment; (2) We have uncommonly high academic and behavioral expectations combined with extensive individual supports; and (3) We know that without great teachers, nothing else matters.  We believe that elevating student achievement and transforming lives requires constant attention to hundreds of different elements—not one, magical 100% solution, but rather one hundred, individual 1% solutions.

Brooklyn East Collegiate will offer a structured, college preparatory academic environment, a longer school day and longer school year, and extremely high expectations for both academics and behavior.  The school’s curriculum is based on the New York State standards and includes double periods of English Language Arts and Mathematics daily, as well as daily hour-long classes in Social Studies and Science beginning in the 5th grade.

Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School will join five other Collegiate charter schools in Brooklyn.  Brooklyn East Collegiate is part of the Uncommon Schools network.  The first school in the Collegiate network, Williamsburg Collegiate Charter School, is one of the ten highest-ranked middle schools in New York City (based on the 2008 NYC Department of Education Progress Reports), after being #1 on the 2007 Progress Reports.  100% of Williamsburg Collegiate 7th grade students scored advanced or proficient on the 2008 New York State Math exam and 92% of the same cohort scored advanced or proficient on the 2008 New York State ELA exam.
