The Hebrew Language Academy Charter School (“HLA”) will be a nurturing yet rigorous K-5 dual language school committed to academic excellence as well as to fostering Hebrew language proficiency. Students will achieve a sophisticated knowledge of English Language Arts, mathematics, the sciences, and social studies. This innovative curriculum will be enhanced by art, music, technology and physical education, incorporating Hebrew language instruction, using a partial immersion proficiency model. Students will develop a strong sense of social responsibility through the integration of community service and service learning into classroom studies. Students will graduate with a solid foundation for further academic learning and continuous personal development.
HLA will have an extended day and year and a student to teacher ratio of 12:1, with each classroom having General Studies and Hebrew language teachers. HLA will utilize the workshop model delivering balanced instruction. Facilitating differentiated and individualized instruction, the workshop model is highly effective with at-risk as well as with academically gifted students. HLA will implement the Proficiency Approach in teaching the Hebrew language consistent with the workshop model. This consistency lends itself to a seamless transition for HLA students from instruction in Hebrew to instruction in English-driven core subjects. HLA’s Social Studies curriculum includes the exploration of Hebrew culture and history in the context of both American and world history and the promotion of service learning to provide students with real opportunities to demonstrate social responsibility. HLA will infuse its students with values of tolerance and respect for others. |
