SUNY Trustees Renew 6 Charter Schools and Award 6 New York State Stimulus Fund Grants

Upon recommendation of the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, the SUNY Board of Trustees’ Charter Schools Committee (“Committee”), acting on behalf of the full SUNY Board of Trustees, on April 24, 2018, approved 6 resolutions to renew 6 SUNY authorized charter schools in or around New York City, and 1 resolution to approve $932,675 in New York Charter Schools Stimulus Fund facilities grants to various charter schools authorized by various charter entities.

Renewals

  • Academic Leadership Charter School (Bronx) opened 2009 and is located at 677 East 141st St, Bronx (elementary grades), and at 470 Jackson Ave, Bronx (middle school grades), both in New York City Community School District 7. The school currently serves students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Academic Leadership Charter School received a full-term renewal of five years.
  • Achievement First Aspire Charter School (Brooklyn) opened in 2013 and is located at 982 Hegeman Ave, Brooklyn in New York City Community School District 19. The school currently serves students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Achievement First Aspire Charter School received a full-term renewal of five years.
  • Achievement First Brownsville Charter School (Brooklyn) opened in 2008 and is located at 2021 Bergen St, Brooklyn, in New York City Community School District 23 (elementary and middle school grades) and at 301 Vermont St, Brooklyn in New York City Community School District 19 (high school grades). The school currently serves students in Kindergarten through 10th grade. Achievement First Brownsville Charter School received a full-term renewal of five years.
  • Achievement First Crown Heights Charter School (Brooklyn) received its original charter from the New York City Department of Education in 2005 and merged with the SUNY authorized Achievement First Bushwick Charter School in 2015. The school is located at 790 East New York Ave, Brooklyn (elementary and middle school grades), and at 1485 Pacific St, Brooklyn (high school grades), both in New York in New York City Community School District 7. The school currently serves students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Achievement First Crown Heights Charter School received a full-term renewal of five years.
  • Middle Village Preparatory Charter School (Manhattan) opened in 2013 and is located at 68-02 Metropolitan Ave, Middle Village, New York in New York City Community School District 24. The school currently serves students in 6th through 8th grade. Middle Village Preparatory Charter School received a full-term renewal of five years.
  • University Preparatory Charter High School (Bronx) opened in 2008 and is located at 600 St. Ann’s Ave., 4th Floor, Bronx, in New York City Community School District 7. The school currently serves students in 9th through 12th grade. University Preparatory Charter High School received a full-term renewal of five years.

New York State Stimulus Fund Grants

  • The Charter Schools Stimulus Fund (SSF) Grant Program was established in 1998 to provide discretionary financial support to charter schools for costs associated with the development, implementation, and operation of charter schools. For the 2017-18 grant cycle, 6 applications were approved for a total of $932,675. The awardees consist of 3 SUNY authorized charter schools and 3 charter schools authorized by the New York State Education Department.
