2015 Request for Proposals Released

The SUNY Charter Schools Institute (“Institute”) announces the release of the 2015 SUNY Request for Proposals (“RFP”) to open new charter schools in New York State, including New York City.  The New York Charter Schools Act of 1998 (as amended, the “Act”) requires New York’s charter authorizers to solicit applications to establish new charter schools by way of a Request for Proposals process. The statute also mandates that SUNY issue a draft RFP for public comments prior to issuing the RFP. The Response to Public Comments is available here. All comments were reviewed by Institute staff, and changes were made to the RFP based on the feedback received.

The Institute is holding two rounds for available responses to this RFP: one commencing on July 10, 2015 and one commencing on December 11, 2015. 

Timelines for each round are outlined in the RFP; following are some key dates :                                             

For the cycle commencing on July 10, 2015:

  • Required Letter of Intent Due: July 10, 2015 by 12:00 p.m. EST
  • Final Proposal Due: July 29, 2015 by 12:00 p.m. EST
  • Target School Opening Date: Fall 2016 or 2017
  • The Institute anticipates presenting any new charter recommendations that may result from the July 2015 cycle to the SUNY Board of Trustees’ Charter Schools Committee in October 2015.

For the cycle commencing on December 11, 2015, key dates include:

  • Required Letter of Intent Due: December 11, 2015 by 12:00 p.m.  EST
  • Final Proposal Due: January 22, 2016 by 12:00 p.m. EST
  • Target School Opening Date: Fall 2017

As part of the SUNY Request for Proposals to establish a new charter school, SUNY requires Business Plans for charter schools that partner or intend to partner with not-for-profit charter management organizations (CMOs) or educational service providers (ESPs). The Charter School Business Plan Requirements for Applicants document provides an overview of the business plan requirements included in the SUNY RFP for establishing a new school.

SUNY Trustees Renew 13 Charter Schools, Vote Not to Renew 2 Charter Schools, and Approve 2 Merger Requests

Upon recommendation of the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, the SUNY Board of Trustees’ Charter Schools Committee (“Committee”), acting on behalf of the full SUNY Board of Trustees, today approved 13 resolutions to renew 13 SUNY authorized charter schools: 11 in or around New York City – in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Long Island; and 2 in upstate New York – in Albany and Rochester.

The Committee voted not to renew 2 SUNY authorized charter schools, both in Albany.

The Committee also voted to approve two merger requests: 1 for Achievement First-Bushwick Charter School and 1 for Leadership Preparatory Bedford Stuyvesant Charter School, both in Brooklyn.

SUNY Trustees Renew 10 Charter Schools

Upon recommendation of the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, the SUNY Board of Trustees’ Charter Schools Committee, acting on behalf of the full SUNY Board of Trustees, approved 10 resolutions to renew 10 SUNY authorized charter schools: 6 in New York City – in Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island; and 4 in upstate New York – in Albany, Buffalo, and Rochester.

Announcing the 2014-15 State Stimulus Fund Grant RFP

The SUNY Charter Schools Institute (Institute), acting on behalf of the Board of Trustees of the State  University of New York (SUNY), is pleased to announce that it will accept applications for New York
State Charter Schools Stimulus Fund (SSF) grants in support of charter school Facility projects with  bonus points available for performing arts programs/projects.

Schools authorized by SUNY, the Chancellor of the New York City School District, the Board of  Regents/New York State Education Department and the Buffalo Board of Education are all  potentially qualified schools under this Request for Proposals (RFP).

Pursuant to a 2014-15 State budget appropriation, SUNY has $3.1 million in SSF funding available to  award to eligible charter school applicants regardless of authorizer.
